Description: This training will provide an overview of the legal framework, procedures, legal presumptions, and best practices for ensuring that paternity is appropriately determined at the onset of a dependency and neglect case. GAL and magistrate Debra Dodd will present the statutory and case law legal authority, explain recent appellate court decisions impacting practice, and provide practice tips. GAL Vivian Burgos will provide practice tips, give guidance on the overlap of the GAL’s duties of an independent investigation in a D&N case and inquiry into paternity and family finding, and comment on the importance of establishing paternity to ensure timely permanence for children.
