Audience: OCR attorneys with 1-3 years of experience that work on any case type, not just D&N cases, and new OCR attorneys beginning this fiscal year (around July 1st).

Description: This Core Competency training will provide an overview of the law, skills, and advocacy strategies for new dependency and neglect GAL attorneys and will introduce OCR policies, billing procedures, and supports.

Day one of this conference is a required training for all new OCR attorneys beginning FY17 and both days are required for new dependency & neglect GAL attorneys.

Day two will provide an introduction to child and adolescent development, substance abuse, mental illness, educational stability, immigration, JD/crossover cases, and establishing legitimacy/building credibility in your district.  The second day will also include a brief legal overview of federal laws impacting child welfare cases and a longer session devoted to Title 19 and the stages of a dependency proceeding.
