Generative AI and the Practice of Law: Trends, Ethics, and What’s Next

Description

Artificial intelligence tools present a unique opportunity for lawyers to better serve their clients and better manage the practice.

  • AI is also increasingly embedded in everyday software—including programs you’ve used for years that didn’t originally have AI features. These tools may now include functions like smart suggestions, document drafting, or automated tagging that were added quietly through updates. Attorneys should be especially mindful when prompted to “turn on” or “enable” new features, as this may activate AI capabilities without much explanation.
  • If you suspect that you or your staff may have enabled such features in the past, try asking an AI assistant (like ChatGPT) what kinds of AI functions might now be running in the background of the software you use, and whether they can be turned off. This is not only important to understand, but also a good opportunity to practice using AI, especially since AI is great at explaining how software works, and you can ask follow-up questions to clarify. Checking settings and reading help documentation are also useful ways to investigate.

Join us to learn about the current trends, beneficial uses of AI in your practice, how to ethically integrate AI into the practice, and what’s ahead in this rapidly evolving landscape.
