2026 Excellence in Youth Defense

Description

Join the Office of the State Public Defender, Office of Alternate Defense Counsel, Transformative Justice Project and Office of the Child’s Representative for the annual Excellence in Youth Defense Conference. This free virtual conference brings together experts and practitioners in delinquency and direct file work; defense teams, guardians ad litem, and other youth advocates practicing in this field are encouraged to join us for two days of collaboration and learning.

Topics include:

  • Navigating Medicaid and other funding for justice-involved youth
  • Advocating for community-based alternatives to detention
  • Litigating petitions for review of magistrate orders
  • Advocating around school threat appraisals
  • Reasonable efforts and DHS involvement in delinquency cases
  • Building resilience and fighting complacency
  • A juvenile parole primer

Conference details will be sent to registrants in the coming months. A final agenda with Zoom links to join each session will be sent closer to the conference date. We anticipate being able to record these sessions if speakers grant permission. CLE will be provided.

**This conference is limited to attorneys and their legal teams representing youth in the juvenile justice system.
