Youth without lawful status in the United States might be hesitant to disclose their immigration status and unaware that they may qualify to apply for permanent status in the country. This session will cover who the non-citizen youth are in Colorado, where they are coming from and why, and provide tips for establishing trust to best serve these youth. The most common forms of immigration status youth might be eligible for, including an in-depth overview of Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, a pathway to permanent residency for abused, neglected, and abandoned youth will also be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
1. Practitioners will understand the most common forms of immigration status and eligibility for each.
2. Practitioners will gain an understanding of the additional barriers and obstacles non-citizen youth have to overcome.
2. Practitioners will learn how to best support and advocate for their non-citizen youth clients by making referrals for immigration legal services.
3. Practitioners will learn tips for building trust with their youth clients.
